A Brief History of Aviator Sunglasses
These distinctive shades have enjoyed plenty of screen time in popular films like “Top Gun,” where fighter pilots were seen sporting Ray-Ban Aviators between dogfights, but their story begins far from Hollywood.
Bausch & Lomb’s Ray-Ban sunglasses introduced the style in the 1930s. Intended to shield pilots’ eyes from sunlight at high altitudes, the design had broad appeal. During World War II, notable military men like General Douglas MacArthur were spotted wearing Ray-Ban Aviators. Hollywood took notice, and similar sunglasses have been worn by many a leading man. The frame shape is now available from multiple eyewear manufacturers.
